"We have approximately 176 sites on air. Of all of the sites that have taken a direct lightning hit, not one ever sustained damage even if the strike was so severe that the surge suppressor itsels sacrificed. At our switch site an electrical meter can with meter still attached was almost vaporized by lightning. The meter was found near the site having been blown off the wall. What is even more amazing is the 10" metal disk, made of copper and other metals that the cell tech found on the ground had gravel fused into it by the head that was generated by the strike. The 480V service and the 480/240 transformer were destroyed but the base station was completely unaffected. The site remained on air, working off its battery backup.
